Tver Regional Art Gallery (TOKG) was founded in 1866. Opened as an independent museum in 1937. From 1929 – Art Gallery Museum of Local History, from 1937 – Kalinin Regional Art Gallery, from 1990 – present name. Since 1896 (with a break in 1936 – 1961) is set in at the Tver Imperial Palace, an architectural monument of XVIII – XIX centuries. (architects Nikitin, Kazakov, Rossi, Rezanov). Section of ancient art includes icons of Tver school XIV – XVI centuries, Tver unique frescoes XV – XVI centuries, Collection of "Royal Doors" and wooden sculptures, a collection of copper sculpture, the work of S. Ushakov and other famous painters.
In the collection Russian art of XVIII – XX centuries the most significant and interesting are the following collections: Portrait of XVIII – early. XIX centuries (I. Vishnjakov, A. Antropov, F. Rokotov, V. Borovikovskiy, S. Shchukin, V.Tropinin; "Rossika"), allegorical and religious paintings of the XVIII century, A. Venetsianov works and artists of his school (Soroca , N. Krylov, Tyranov etc.), landscape painting abroad XIX – XX centuries (Levitan, S. Zhukovsky, Korovin, I. Grabar, Rylov, Stepanov, V. Byalynitsky – Birulya et al), Works by Valentin Serov and artists in his circle of the estate Domotkanovo (N. Simonovich – Efimov, I. Efimov, Derviz, V. Favorskiy and others), easel and monumental sculpture of the XX century. (Andreev, V. Mukhina, S. Konenkov, Korolev, I. Shadr, I. Frikh – Har, I. Efimov, Zelenskiy, E. Unknown, O. Komov and others)
The collection of Western European art includes paintings, sculptures, drawings and engravings of Italian, French, German, Dutch, Flemish, and others schools of XVI – XX centuries, including L. Corona, A. Magnasco, S. de Bray, N. Muyarta, A. Coypel, F. Battaloli, F. de Troyes, K. – Vernet, A. Govartsa.
Significant and diverse is section of decorative – applied art porcelain and earthenware of Russia (including the most comprehensive collection of products in the country plant Auerbach – Kuznetsova (now – Konakovsky porcelain factory), numbering about 7,000 units.),of Europe, East; Russian and European art furniture; art glass, metal, fabric, etc.
